character information
FULL NAME: Hugo Arthur Weasley
AGE & DOB: April 17 2009
HOUSE & YEAR:Gryffindor and Seventh
BLOODLINE: Pure on father's side, mother was muggleborn.
POSITIONS: Beater for Gryffindor quidditch team

PERSONALITY:
Hugo isn't wildy extroverted, as many of his Gryffindor friends tend to be, but he is known to make a cheeky remark or two in class and is never one to miss a party. He tends to take his queues from the people around him and has a pretty keen sense of when to let loose and when to keep his mouth shut; although he's had to train himself to maintain that ability and sometimes slips up. While he's made a good place for himself in the many socially acceptable cliques within Hogwarts, Hugo can't help occasionally feeling like a secondary character in the story of his life. His mother would say that he doesn't assert himself enough, and Hugo would have to grudgingly agree. It's not that he doesn't have ideas, his head is constantly swimming with thoughts and analyses (the downside of having his mother's wit and his father's attention span,) Hugo simply doesn't have the confidence to take charge in most situations--but he's working on that.

He's over-analytical and loves details; the more he can list about a person, the more he seems intrigued by them, the same goes for places and objects. That's why most people aren't sure what Hugo thinks about them when they first meet, he likes to reserve judgment until he has enough information. Because of his tendency to overthink, Hugo also has a propensity for over-complicating things; he's always the one ready with Alohomora before someone else discovers the door wasn't actually locked. These things embarrass Hugo because they make him feel different; just like with answering questions in class and correcting homework for friends, he has to hold back because he's afraid. He blames this paranoia on his mother, who told him that she'd barely had any friends throughout first and second year, but also on his father, for so often complaining about what a pain in the arse Hermione was when she was in know-it-all mode. Because of this, Hugo has put a lot of work into maintaining his social status and, now in his seventh year, is finally getting comfortable enough with the friends he has to let go of some of that anxiety.

Hugo prides himself in being a mostly genuine, if somewhat generic, nice guy. He's kind to everyone until he finds a good enough reason not to be, and even then he will mostly just stay out of their way. When the inevitable mean words are being thrown around about various members of the Hogwarts community, Hugo will laugh along, but never contribute; this isn't because he doesn't have an insult or two ready in his head, he's just terrified that whatever he says will get back to the subject, and he'll have to answer for it. Confrontation with a close friend is one of Hugo's biggest fears, and he tries to avoid it at all costs; this can often leave him vulnerable to light forms of peer pressure, but he's got enough backbone to say no when it's something that really matters.

Hugo doesn't like talking about his parents, even in discussions about the war, although he fights passionately for the ideals they have always stood for. His relationship with them has been a tense one for years, and he thinks of Hogwarts as his escape from the fighting and the constant expectations. The fact that Hugo has been struggling with his sexuality for the past few years does nothing to help the family dynamic; to him, it's only one more thing about him that his parents wouldn't understand.

Hugo's basic goal in life is to find something that he's good at, something he really enjoys, and simply do it to the best of his ability. Of all the hobbies his mother forced down his throat as a child, the only one he ended up sticking with was dance; Hugo gets a satisfaction out of dancing that he can't find anywhere else. There's something about following step-by-step procedures that can calm Hugo down even at the worst of times, but at the same time there is always a challenge involved. Dancing provides a distraction from the stress of everyday life, and it motivates him, because even if your performance is "perfect" it can always be better. Hugo isn't sure yet whether he's going to spend the rest of his life pursuing a dance career, or open up his own shop in Diagon Alley, or even become a professor at Hogwarts; but he does know that if he never ends up in the Daily Prophet for it, he'll be all too happy.

HISTORY: It's a well-known fact that being the child of Hermione Weasley is a stressful and demanding task--one need only take a look at Rose to be convinced of this--but very few people think about the added pressure of also being Ronald Billius Weasley's only son. Hugo has been poked and prodded in different directions by his parents since he was old enough to walk; when his mother decided she wanted Hugo to learn French, Ron would decide he wanted him to learn chess. By the time he was seven years old, he was taking lessons in Violin, German, Italian and French as well as taking part in the Wee Wizards Mini Quidditch league and Mlle. Abouchar's Ballet School. He never saw anything strange about his busy lifestyle; in fact Hugo operated under the impression that every child in the world kept the same schedule until he was nearly ten, he just figured they all had nicer parents who would let them learn about fun things. One particular Christmas, Hugo overheard his cousins James and Fred talking about a trip James' father had taken him on to a sweet factory; for three months after that, Hugo believed that Albus, James and Lily spent eight hours a day learning about the production and sale of candy.

Hugo's first year at Hogwarts was the year his parents almost split up. Being one of the youngest children in the Potter-Weasley clan meant that most of the school had gotten over the whole "famous parents" thing a long time ago, but The Daily Prophet still liked to follow them around, and Ron and Hermione were very bad at keeping their fights quiet. Hugo can remember sitting down for his breakfast one morning only to hear that his parents were in the paper; when he finally managed to procure a copy, he saw a half-page article with pictures and quotes and everything. Some of the things his mother had apparently said were incredibly hurtful, and a lot of the language his father had used were things Hugo had never even heard before. The argument hadn't been the first and the article wasn't the last; three weeks later Hugo saw his parents' picture in the paper again and eventually the scandal turned into a regular column in the Prophet: Weasley Wars. Needless to say, the kind of attention brought on by those articles made Hugo's first year a very uncomfortable one. It didn't help matters much when Hugo had to spend his birthday at Uncle Harry's house because Ron had moved out of the family home for a few weeks. Things looked really bad for a while, with Ron and Hermione trying in vain to keep up appearances for their children, but somehow by the time Rose and Hugo had come home for summer, Ron had moved back into the house and things were starting to look normal again.

Unfortunately, that troubling time in Hugo's life was what started the change in his feelings towards his parents. He started thinking more critically about everything his parents told him, less inclined to believe them without question than before. His mother encouraged this at first, claiming she was proud of her son's ability to think for himself; but as Hugo grew older and the hostility towards his parents grew, Hermione started becoming concerned. Even though it had been decided that divorce was off the table, Ron and Hermine still fought bitterly from time to time, and they'd found new ways of doing it since the scandal in the Prophet. As Hugo reached his teenage years, his parents' demands became more and more irreconcilable; if his mother owled him one week to tell him that he needed to spend more time on his studies, an owl came from his father came three days later, telling him that he should try out for Quidditch and get himself a girlfriend. By the end of Hugo's third year he became sick of it, and when his mother tried to enroll him in supplementary summer courses, Hugo told her he wasn't doing them and that he was quitting all of his other extra-curricular activities. One day, Hermione will get over the shock.

Since then, Hugo has thought twice about following his parents' advice; some would even go so far as to say that he deliberately disobeys their orders to make a point. What Hugo fondly calls his 'interesting period' was between fourth and sixth year, when he was bitter, reserved and mildly antagonistic toward his parents and entire family; he still has a shaky relationship with certain members, but for the most part they understand that he's grown up since then. Hugo loves his parents dearly, and on occasion he even makes a sincere effort to show it; he just doesn't have the same blind faith and admiration for them as he did before first year.

Hugo's life at Hogwarts did a lot to make up for the mess that was his family life; but it didn't start getting bearable until fourth year. In his first three years at Hogwarts, Hugo still felt like he had to be at the top of his class in order to impress his mother. He acted very much like a young Hermione Granger, with his hand up before every question was finished, and found it difficult to make friends in those early years. After The Great Rejection in the summer of third year, Hugo loosened up considerably when it came to academics; at the beginning of fourth year he even tried out for the Quidditch team--not for his father, he insists, but because he was genuinely interested--and he made it! Being one of the Gryffindor beaters helped boost his standing in the school and the camaraderie of being on a team helped him become more comfortable with other people. He started attending parties and taking part in different clubs to try and discover where his interests lay, since he'd never really had much choice in what he did before that. Hugo made many friends throughout fifth and sixth year, and is now considered by most of the school to be a generally OK guy--or at least that's what he hopes they think.

PRANK WARS:
Hugo, being rather eager to please, has undoubtedly participated in pranks before and will certainly do so again. Despite the facts that he doesn't invest much thought in the house rivalries and he doesn't necessarily think the pranks are morally right, as long as there's no chance of anyone getting badly hurt, he'll suspend his conscience and follow the crowd.
